My Magazine Log

September 5, 2010 - 11:16 pm  Print This No Comments

I am kind of nervous since it is my first time to publish own works in local Singapore magazine. The magazine was out on 1st of September and the publisher had sent me a copy of it but I felt a bit disappointed with some of the photos published as it turned out pretty dull and lack of texture. I should have add on some garnishing atop of the chicken. Also, the lens used was 50mm with full aperture. Not quite suitable for product shootings and that was my wrong judgement made. I do appreciate the publisher for giving me the chance to show off these tantalizing culinary in their magazine. Anyway, I hope to do better in the future and excuse the fine details of it.

Note : Photograph @ 2,3,4 by me and contents by respective author / publisher.

The new magazine in town

Error 1 : I should have informed the young man to change his shirt. OMG! Right, image still acceptable except for the garnishing, should have put red chili on it to make it more vibrant. See original here.

I am quite satisfied with the left image (did a bit background settings) but a bit blur for some part of the dish though. Right image is plausible still. See original here.

Error 2 : Tobokki not sharp enough and color is kinda jumble up with the table cloth and as for the Sam Gye Tang on the right, there was no garnishing on top of the chicken. Too plain! They over-cropped my photos I think. See original here and here.

Cheers.

Emmanuel & Jamie (Special Coverage)

February 8, 2010 - 4:25 pm  Print This No Comments

01.01.10 –  I was back to Kuching, my beloved hometown to attend this freaking fun & loving wedding of our secondary school mate. Finally, EJ is tying his knot with Jamie Lo after 5 years of being together. Oh, that's what his proposal video said. It's loud and clear. The SFW – it all started from Form 5 I recalled, bunch of adolescences dunno where to wander and tarry around town, being sluggish. Oh yesh, we're young and energetic and game frags were part of our topics. We gathered around kopitiams and discuss about tactics and strategies. The boys are real pro in this.

"We'll name this group THE SFW, how's that?" EJ asked feveredly some 10 years ago.

Everyone agrees and that's where the name came by. There were 8 members initially,  and everyone was crazy minded. Other than frags, there's no other thing we could do. But of course, we have our tertiary studies later on. Time passe! We're now at our 27/28 and do you see how time flies? Which reminded us what we've achieved in this 10 golden years. Mid-life crisis in mind, yeah… apart of that we're still looking for options to live with, for better lifestyles, compassionate love we sought and enigmas that'll surface sooner or later.

Well, back on the track. After I touched down, the boys gathered @ my house for some preps & formation discussions for tomorrow but of course, it's our EJ's BACHELOR'S NIGHT! So, we've prepared something unusual & memorable for him – and it's gonna go WOW factor for the general audience. It was Mike's idea after analyzing a few youtube clips from KL-gites and since nobody's doing so in Kuching, we'll have to be the first batch to start with.

THIS IS SCOOBY DOO EPIC @ THE SPRING.

EJ had no idea what we're up to. We blindfolded him and he was thrilled with amusement when we groom him up. He thought it was some sorta pig costume or stuff like that. LOL!! We're all burst with laughters. We roamed around The Spring Shopping Mall (Kuching) and pedestrians at the concourse was elated with The Costume in which they thought it was The Spring Management's idea. Well, we've again surprised the crowd.  We unfold EJ @ Silhouette (restaurant) and thank god he was sporty – He as well was burst into laughters.

We had some plans for him after the dinner. Task 1, to buy strangers ice-creams but it must be a lady / girl. Fair enough, the only place to buy ice-cream is sugar bun and look what we have there, superb scooby with tons n tons of admires. WOhooO! Task 2, roam around the mall and say 'HI' to everyone whilst me & Bernard went to Parkson to buy white sleeves. I bet that scob was enjoying shaking hands around. Do enjoy the photos & descriptions below!

The day after we set forth to Hilton early in the morning and the heng tai (bridegroom-men) was being mock by the sisters' (bridesmaids). Well, not to say mock, we need clearance to enter the bride's chamber. That's why the games seemed to be intense. Luckily we had our fun-filled bachelor's night (which was a good training ground before this very day) and passed all sectors prepared by the jee mui's (bridesmaids). The bitter gourd doesn't taste bitter to me at all. I had a few bites.. It goes YUMMY & 'sweet' – same goes to the plum… Ice-cream is easy case for BLCC & Robin. The chung brother's had those WASABI Biscuit. Gab did hint Adrian about the wasabi but he ain't listening… so he got a throb on later afternoon after consuming the wasabi… LOL! As for Mike, I can't recall what he had.. LOL!! EJ is so darn lucky to have the heng tai's around! We covered him!!!!!

Later on… we attended mass & nuptial ceremonial at St. Joseph cathedral – the mass ended at noon. We had a pleasant lunch at 3rd mile's Dong Guan Restaurant. EJ was not present… he had fine dining with Jamie @ Hilton. How sweet! Afternoon was chaos… I compiled the video with limited resources and dang I hate that last minute job to be frank! Luckily I managed to finish it off by 6PM again…. last minute job sux to the fullest! The dinner was held @ Hilton as well and I had my little surprise for the couple which was the music video that I did with together with Adrian, Mike & Gab @ Penang back in November 2009. I palpitate the moment the clip was being broadcast, oh dear. I have no idea what I've came through but that feeling was scary; fear of chastise. Don't ask me why… I dunno where that came from. Adrian saw my expression and he stared at me like he'd seen a ghost! :D So I just ate my duckling while the rest of the clip were being broadcast to the curious audience. Glad there were applaud heard and laughters too. LOL! Why worry? .____.|| Enough rants.

Alright enjoy the pictures & videos prepared for this special coverage of THE SFW Memorable Wedding!!

Note : SFW (Sick Freaking Weirdo) , Halycube (Halycube is trademark of Halyconstudio & Cube Photography)

I see Adrian is more embarrassed than EJ (blindfolded) here. Cuz' EJ's blindfolded and nobody knew who he was.

Unfold!! Finally! Welcome to the party!

That spec was from AVATAR screening in Brisbane LOL! I wonder if he sees twinkle twinklehere

And Scob did some promo for this restaurant! LOL! That display board is a bit misleading though :P

Taste a bit sweet and not so dry. :D

Seafood Carbonara @ Silhouette

Operation Chiong Penang

December 2, 2009 - 2:29 pm  Print This 2 Comments

27.11.2009 – After 11 hours on the bumpy ride, it was great to see Penang island on sight. Been 17 years since I last had Penang food in my tummy. Still remembered when I was a young boy elated of that road trip from Singapore – Melacca – Kuala Lumpur - Ipoh – Penang and return along with my parents and sister. There was this reclining buddha in mind, snake temple, pagoda and those mouth watering food by the open air market I recalled.

I was wondering how Penang looks like since my last visit but looks like it haven't change much except for the poignant food odor that's already in the air. And much likely to have hours of feast n' fiesta with The SFWs.

Mike reached 4 hours earlier than me from Kuala Lumpur (that was 5 hours as compared to mine, 11 freaking hours) and I was kinda giddy headed still but stay vigorous after a can of coffee bought earlier. Man, since when I last had such an arduous road trip? I can't recall. Adrian, Gab & Mike pick me up 15 mins later but looks like the team were still in slumberland (all of them look tired) albeit his place was just 7 mins away from the bus terminal.

Greeted everyone and threw off with my jokes for the day. Then, we went nearby market for breakfast. It's always good to have a few old chaps around for some laughs and joke, the fun thing was sending mms updates to our beloved EJ who was in Borneo busy being a government servant cum servant at Jamie's kopitiam in Sibu. Well, for every meal we had, the sessions were always filled with message tones and phone pad taps. Welcome to the 21st century where everyone is connected, anytime, anywhere – micro updates is essential lately.

This is Penang Curry Mee. It tasted like our Sarawak Laksa but just something different here. The toppings of squid and cockles.

After breakfast, we started off a few rounds of errands for the entire day and gawd I tell you it was damn freaking tiresome for repetitions but we just go with the trend and ignore the redundancy of task, simply by having some twist and turns of video shootings, photography – snappy till flabby, together with a few funny statements and sing-along session so it'll not bore us to death – definitely not… for the guys. Gabby, on the other hand gave us some cool ideas that were implemented into our works making it foolproof. Indeed, she's the dame of The SFW! bwaahahhaha!

We ordered Domino Pizza's for our lunch. Adrian grabbed out some of his coupons (The Late Coupon Bonanza). In other words, Domino Pizza will give away one regular pizza for free IF they are late for delivery. Thank god! THEY WERE LATE! So we had another free regular pizza for our lunch. HAHAAHA! And another Late Coupon Bonanza were given… Man.. I wonder if Domino Pizza will ever survive like that. XD

Ah… the cheesy loaf with salsa sauce!

For of us on the dining dock! Hey I like this when the 4 of us were on  the devices, just like the scenes in the cyber cafe!

Taste good man!!!!

Of course we must have time constraint for this trip by rewarding ourself with something after the hard work – seafood!! We wrap our Day 1 works with the treat *clap clap* and good to go. Nothing lavish or expensive but just some wonderful seafood meals along with a few sunset shots at Teluk Kumbar. It was awesome!! Thanks to the Garmin GPS that brought us there hahahahaha. After, we visited The Queensbay Mall for some windows shopping and back home at 12am. Why so late? Cause we hang out @ Starbucks Coffee and relaxed~ Looks like a family day out wannabe LOL!

Take a deep breathe!

On the Sandy Shores

Wonderful Sunset @ Teluk Kumbar

Golden sunset with cirrus intortus along with stratocumulus (referring to the clouds) formed.

The chicken satay was well-marianated, sweet and juicy but too bad there's no satay gravy for this. :(

Yeap.. the deep fried squid best served with plain rice and customized chili sauce.

My favorite vegetable on every dining occasion, Kai-lan. I prefer Kai-lan with big onions. :)

Last but not least, oven baked crab. It's a bit dry and tasteless.  Kinda regretted to order this. Should have ordered Nestle Oat Flavor. Nevermind :D

Gab with her new idol. Oh… no more Harry Potter ka? hahahah

Adrian with his favorite magazine, Mobile World, who's also a big fan of Nokia phones (to date) :D

Gimme some lollipop!

Reading reading reading….

The next morning we had full loads of dim sum breakfast to fill our stomach before we move to youth park to have some shots and fun around. Well,  Information undisclosed.

Variety of Dim Sum on our table. Man… we bloated after…. haha!

Carrot cake taste good! Behind left was deep fried bean curd and right, yam puff.

Dim Sum specialty – Miniature burger

I love this glutinous rice or what they called Lor Mai Kai
(with chicken cubes, mushrooms and taiwan sausage)

Late noon, we check out Gurney Plaza and had A&W for lunch. It had been long since I last pay this american restaurant a visit and still, The Root Beer Float taste better than ever. Yeah, I had my A&W (when I was young) every month while it was still open for business back then. The outlet was unbeatable as compared with KFC or MacD but unfortunately A&W's business went sloppy and closed down. How sad of that!

After our gurney plaza stroll, we bought some pirated DVD, snacks and headed back home for a short nap before we made our way to The Cathederal of The Holy Spirit. I was surprised with the pro-anti ISA spirit in this church and I do agree with the grudge that all nations had undergone. Freed the innocence and ISA is just another crappy government department in Malaysia that's deemed useless to be frank. I am also surprised to watch youtube being broadcasted live there – to the general audience during father's preaching. It's about The Advent Conspiracy! Watch it below…. After mass, it was time to feast again and guess what we had?

** Please Scroll Down **

Ya.. who likes ISA? Barely no one except the officials.

Still bright but we're late for mass! ahhhh!!

ADVENT CONSPIRACY
(watch the video to understand what's it about)

Mass ended at 7PM and we were all like hungry ghost searching for food. Panic not! There's a kopitiam just behind the cathedral and I ordered a number of them. Most of the dish were pretty affordable. Check it out!

The famous Penang Laksa @ RM3. Mmmm Sour Sour!

You shouldn't miss Penang Char Kueh Teow as well, with prawns and cockles.

Now this is a bit alien, Penang ramen. The dish doesn't present well with what the image being portrayed… ended up it taste like cantonese noodle. Not bad!

I didn't try this but gab said it was okay.

Hahaha this is weirdo Rojak first time ever seen!

So we pay MOMMY WANG a visit, just opposite Queensbay Mall (after dinner)…

Colorful drinks from strawberry to blueberry to papaya (with black pearl)

The taiwan chicken chop taste norm – just like those eaten by the Taiwanese road stalls. Kinda salty and they put lotsa pepper on it.

Adrian introduced us this…Taiwanese Sweet Potato. Woah.. I think the MSG was a bit overly. Kinda sweet and salty :D Not bad after all..

To conclude this, I'd like to say a big thank you to my godparents (^_^'''), and Mike as well of having this wonderful short holiday together. Of course this short holiday was meant for something else that need to be accomplished. I do enjoyed the stay although it's short but the echos remain inside. Applause to all with the great effort! It was a memorable ones. Bless ya all… ONCE AGAIN, SFW DID IT AGAIN! Bwhahahahahahahah! Thanks for reading this crap!

Joe.

Ipoh Town

March 30, 2009 - 2:17 pm  Print This 2 Comments

Well, Ipoh is a wonderful town (for a half day trip) which brings back good o’ memories back in the 60s’-70s’; with those tarnished metals, abandoned structures and grunge brick walls at some corners. The vintage shop houses never failed to impressed me though it’s not well-preserved. In other words, this is definitely my befitting location for wedding photography. Ah ah ah! :)

After breakfast, Kenny’s dad brought us around for a short stroll before we made our way to the train station. Did bought local specialty which was ‘pressured steamed chicken’ @ RM16 (whole). It tasted just like my mom’s recipe – that chicken (chunks) porridge years back. Aw!~

Enjoy the photos.

It does looks a bit like Kuching, those shop houses!

One way it means….

At some corner with the grills

My pick of the week, an abandoned shop house with sealed window and grunge walls.

A pigeon on a steel bar

Clutters! This picture is a bit overexposed. Well…

 More grunge wall!

Residential area next to a few shop houses. It’s an intriguing sight to have a 2 bird’s cage on the pole. Rare scene & those spiral stair case is awesome!

I bet this unit is haunted. ahhaha! It looks like the unit had been abandoned for ages!

Cloths hanged on the bamboo stick and looks good with those corrugated roof + antenna, depicting an unusual sight of past rural residential scene.

Most residents here are Chinese and tricycles were pretty common on those days.

3 windows! Ah, can u spot an error? ;) Was kinda tired when I edited this and didn’t notice either. haha!

 This is Market Road

Lowered down my position for this corridor shoot.

Lionel playing hide & seek. haha :P

 Bike anyone? ;)

 When pigeons flew…

This rusty painted lift is rare and yes, located somewhere at the train station. Shall we take a ride up to the 2nd floor. We’re kinda surprised that it’s still functioning…

Unhinged and off we go… just like those old elevator in the movies.. Was kinda creepy inside. Adventurous mode maybe?

 ARGH!!!!! We’re trapped!

Haha… No.. that was a joke!
We’re on the 2nd floor ^^; :P I had a brilliant idea for this, outside these hotel rooms.

We had a short photo session of our own, while waiting the other 3 to arrive! :D

Big thank you to Jacky who’s generous enough to pose. Emo!~

 Speecless!

Next time, don’t sit with your legs wide open! haha!

Played wireless flash on the staircase. Cleaners were kinda amazed with our intentions. Haha.. but we carried on…

Another attempt on Wayne (that use to be my nick.. lol)!

 Excuse the pose hahhaaha!
Cut the crap… let’s get back to the station! LOL!

We’re about to depart at 1pm sharp.

Kenny’s so happy with the monopod. hahaa!

Mike did last few shots before leaving..

Off we go. Goodbye Ipoh! It’s a wonderful town to be in with cheap food and great streetscapes.

- The End -
